Oct 2nd 1926: BOROUGH DANCE FINALE – The final dance of the season, organised by Mr. A. J. WILLIAMS, on behalf of the Corporation, was held with much success at the Town-hall on Thursday. About a hundred were present, and REED’s band supplied the music. Some beautiful lighting effects were carried out. Mr. T. HEALEY and Miss May BARTLETT won a silver cup in a Charleston competition.
Oct 2nd 1926: VECTIS CHESS CLUB – began its fourth season last Thursday, when several new members were present. Their tournaments are being arranged, including the Island championship for the BLAKELEY trophy, the Gambit tournament for Mr. DAWS’s prize, and the handicap tournament, open to all members for the prize given by the President (Mr. F. A. JOYCE), Mr. P. L. BLAKELEY, George-street, is the hon. Secretary.
Oct 2nd 1926: SERIOUS COLLISION – occurred at the Melville-street and George-street cross-roads on Saturday between a car driven by Miss BETTS, of Newport, and a motor-cyclist, Mr. W. CHANDLER, of Lind-place. The latter was thrown heavily and sustained bad cuts on his face and arm, necessitating treatment at the I.W. County Hospital, and his machine was badly smashed. The car and the driver escaped injury.
Oct 2nd 1926: RYDE BOROUGH POLICE – William ARNOLD, milk retailer, of Monkton-street, Ryde, was summoned for the alleged selling of new milk deficient in fat. The case was adjourned.
Oct 2nd 1926: I.W. COUNTY HOSPITAL – With the object of organising a special effort in Ryde to raise funds for the £15,000 reconstruction scheme of the Royal I.W. County Hospital, a public meeting was convened by the Mayor (Mr. Rowland RUSSELL). Eloquent appeals were made on behalf of the Hospital. Up to date, about one-third of the amount required has been raised.
Oct 9th 1926: HOLY TRINITY ‘BOYS’ SCHOOL – It is proposed to hold a gathering of the old boys of the school, probably in the form of a dinner and concert. The arrangements are in the hands of Capt. Harry SIMMS, of 66 Asylum-road, Milton, Portsmouth.
Oct 9th 1926: ALLOTMENT HOLDERS – There was a good attendance at the annual general meeting of the Allotment Holders Association held at the Victoria Dining-rooms. A sprayer for the use of members had been purchased. The last supply of seed potatoes had proved most satisfactory, and in most cases, members had had extraordinary crops. Attention was drawn to the lack of water at Quarry-road, and it was stated that the delegates were taking the necessary steps to ensure the laying-on of a supply.
Oct 9th 1926: RADIO SOCIETY – The opening meeting of the winter session was held at the Club’s headquarters, the Eagle Hotel, on Tuesday. Mr. H. GROOME gave an instructive paper on “Batteries, their care and maintenance.” Mr. GROOME is regarded as one of the leading local authorities on the subject. The membership of the Society has shown an encouraging increase. Five new members were enrolled at the meeting.
Oct 16th 1926: MOTOR DRIVERS’ OUTING – On Thursday when local taxi and charabanc drivers, with their friends, numbering over 50, held their annual outing to Salisbury, under enjoyable conditions.
Oct 16th 1926: STEAMER’S PREDICAMENT – The passenger steamer Duchess of Albany, which on Thursday left the Pier with about 20 passengers for Portsmouth, was brought to a standstill half-way across through the steering gear becoming jammed. After nearly an hour’s delay the passengers were transferred to the steamer Shanklin, which left Ryde at 7.55 a.m.
Oct 23rd 1926: ISLAND WOMAN’S INVENTION – Mrs. C. BUCHANAN, of Courtfield, Ryde, has won the premier prize of £25 at the International Exhibition at Westminster in the section Domestic and Household. Her very ingenious and very useful invention is the Buchanan pivoted lid, shown attached to a saucepan, with insulated handle to prevent burning of fingers. It has been patented, and will be soon on the market.
