Following on from a request by members, we have begun featuring a specific grave of a person who died in whatever was the current month.
On a Wednesday afternoon, 22nd August 1877, at Yelf’s Hotel, our townsman, Mr. W. H. Wallis, the well-known auctioneer, brought under the hammer the Eagle Brewery, and a number of public houses.
In May, our busy research team added 27 biographical records to names on the website, including that of Mr George Douglas Handley of Handleys Ltd, Southsea.
The Ponda Rosa horse with its cowboy and cart, was a masterpiece by Mr Jack Whitehead, internationally re-known master-carver.
It was built in 1837/38, and the first known occupiers were the Misses Key, as listed in the church rate book 1838 to 1843.
Built in the 1860's the Partlands had a chequered history, with many changes of landlord and brewery ownership.
In April, our busy research team added 23 biographical records to names on the website, including that of Mr. John Emery Vardy, proprietor of the Albany Hotel.
Still remarkably active despite her 103 years is Mis Miss Louisa Way, of Briardale, Meaders Road, Ryde. Her dress is up-to-date and her interest in affairs lively.
On Wednesday 15th May 1850, the foundation stone of the new chapel, in connection with the Independents of Ryde, was laid at Haylands.
