On Saturday 29th April, under gloomy skies and with a sharp breeze, a party of thirteen set off from the Ryde Cemetery Learning Centre at the start of a Bird Walk led by Richard Smout.
In April, our busy research team added 43 biographical records to names on the website, including that of Mr. John Jenkins, who for nearly 40 years had been associated with the work of Missions to Seamen.
On Wednesday 19 April 2017, some of the Ryde Social Heritage Group members met at the Bus and Coach Museum, Park Road, Ryde, where we were welcomed by enthusiastic volunteers.
Mr. Richard Smout was welcomed as the Ryde Social Heritage Group's new President at their recent April Members' Meeting.
In February, our busy research team added 51 biographical records to names on the website, including that of Mr Robert John Cheek, a much-esteemed Island agriculturist.
We have decided to branch out with our monthly photo feature and provide a bit more variety. Over the next few months we are planning to focus on interesting architecture within the Ryde area.
Entertainment was provided for Elim Senior Circle when Harry Withington (otherwise known as 'the Yankee') was rather alarming dressed as a cowboy and waving a gun around! His nagging wife Sarah was also a bit scary with her threatening walking stick.
In January, our busy research team added 41 biographical records to names on the website, including that of Mr William Gabell, a well-known townsman. He started a printing business at 43 Union Street, Ryde.
A very interesting event was enjoyed by members and friends on Saturday 4th February 2017 from 10am till 2pm at Ryde library.
On Saturday 28 January 18 people met at Ryde Cemetery Heritage and Learning Centre for the RSPB Garden Birdwatch event. Fortunately it was dry and sunny, although rather chilly.
