The first Ryde Social Heritage Group Members meeting of the year was held on the 7th January at the George Street Centre and despite a spate of seasonal illness was attended by 33 Members and 6 Visitors.

In Georgian times Assembly Rooms were gathering places for members of the higher social classes. In smaller towns they were often attached to the best inn or library, in Ryde's case, the Marine Library in Union Street.
We have passed another milestone, over 18,000 new records have been added to the website, the actual total at the end of December 2016 being 18,068.

Seasonal festivities were in full swing at the Ryde Cemetery Heritage and Learning Centre for RSHG's Victorian Christmas Event. About 40 members and friends passed through the doors between 10.30 and 2pm
Christmas cards tied up with pink wool; a drum addressed to "Ringo, London" and more than 2,300 parcelled poultry were some of the items which faced Ryde sorters and postmen at the Ryde Head Post Office, Union Street, over the holiday.
The Robin with it’s distinctive bright red breast, adds to the spectacle of winter and we tend to notice them more in our gardens at this time of year.
This was the third year running that Haylands Primary School brought both of their Year 3 classes to Ryde Cemetery as an introduction to their Victorian studies.
In October our busy research team added 27 biographical records to names on the website, including that of Mr Harry Williams.
